founder mission
Journey Temple (they/them) is an artist and plant curator based in Boston. They grew up in Tucson, Arizona as a part of the unique Sonoran Desert ecosystem. They finished school early through dual enrollment in City High School and Pima Community College. They then took a year to travel and attend an alternative schooling gap year program at the High Desert Center in Paonia, Colorado. There, Journey’s love of ecology grew through hands-on learning about permaculture, biodynamic farming techniques, agriculture, backcountry living and other practical skills. Their love of plants shifted to indoor gardening and houseplants when they moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where they are now living, working and learning. Studying at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, they are majoring in Studio for Interrelated Media with a minor in sustainability.
Understory Curation was created and founded as an extension of Journey’s artistic practice’s intersection with the world of houseplants. With a large personal collection of their own and years of experience, Journey confidently navigates the artistic styling, maintenance needs and education that their clients need for installations large and small. Plants in your home should be more than a pretty picture that you are stressed about keeping alive, the narrative of your space can be enhanced by the linearity of growing beings. Greenery is grounding and reminds us of the care we give to ourselves and all living things that enter. Plants, humans and the space they cohabitate, all have the potential to be arranged into an ecosystem of collective breath and nourishment. Journey will walk you through identifying what plants can coexist and thrive within the unique environment that is your home. They are here to help you get to the root of your needs, and what kind of plants and plant care will best meet them!
